REFLECTIONS IN THE FOUNTAIN AT 53RD AND PARK AVENUE
The universe of reflected light is often manifest in forms that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
The video and stills presented here were captured in the fall of 2000. I had been walking around mid-town Manhattan when I came upon the fountain in front of the Seagrams building at the corner of 53rd Street and Park Avenue. The surface of the water was reflecting the light that was hitting a building on the other side of 53rd Street. However, the only aspect of that reflection that my eyes could detect was a chaotic blur of light and color. Therefore, I decided to turn the camera's shutter speed to its maximum setting and shoot the surface. At the most basic level, I was attempting to see the un-seeable.
The sequence that opens the video gives some idea of what the surface looked like in real time. The stills, on the other hand, reveal the world that exists beyond the reach of unaided human optics.
The music that accompanies the piece is called "My Dog Eats Beats" and is composed by Console.
